The History of Thanksgiving DayThanksgiving Day is a legal holiday in the U.S.and was first celebrated by the early colonials in New England, though the origin is most likely the harvest festivals that are found in many parts of the world. In 1621, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving after the first harvest was gathered by the Plymouth colonists, a celebration they shared with neighboring Wampanoag Indians. Originally a day of fasting and prayer, in 1623 it was changed to one of thanksgiving after, during a period of drought, the rain came during the prayers. An annual day of national thanksgiving was put forward by the Continental Congress during the American Revolution and in 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day. Many states followed and in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The fourth Thursday of November is proclaimed every year by each president to be Thanksgiving Day. Observance of the day in Canada began in 1879, but only since 1957 has it been a statutory holiday. In Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.
