All women skydiving team claim gold for team GB
Gold medals at the UK nationals
Forget the Olympics, the most exciting sporting event to take place this week is the World skydiving championship in France.
An all women skydiving team have claimed Gold for the UK at the world skydiving championship in Maubeuge, France today.
In a nail biting finish, Bodyflight Storm finished just one point ahead of their next closest rivals the American team Fastrax blue.
The team is made up of Kate Stephens, Hannah Betts, Claire ‘Sparky’ Scott, Sarah Smith and camera man Gary Wainwright.
4-way formation skydiving is one of the most popular forms of competition within the skydiving world: The goal is to complete as many formations as possible in a set amount of time. Do to this teams need speed, accuracy, determination and strength not to mention bravery as the discipline is practised in freefall at speeds reaching 120mph!
The team have been training incredibly hard in the run up to the competition both at the Bodyflight wind tunnel and also at drop zones in the UK and California.
“It’s been an amazing couple of years” says Sarah Smith. “The whole team has trained exceptionally hard in the lead up to the world meet, giving up our normal jobs last year so that we could concentrate on winning a place in the finals. We had to score higher than the reigning world champions to do this which was incredibly tough for a team starting from scratch”
However they have also managed to fit in another world first this year; in May they filmed a live advert for Honda. The advert was broadcast live from Spain and involved 16 top British skydivers spelling out the letters H O N D A in mid air before deploying their canopies.
