BANISH THE HAYFEVER BLUES - without feeling sleepy…

A staggering 15 million people suffer with hay fever in the UK every year, and up to 36% of 12 to 14 year olds are affected.

But there's some good news as recent research shows that Butterbur Petasin is as effective as conventional medicines for treating hay fever but without causing drowsiness.

One study, published in the BMJ in January 2002 , shows that Butterbur Petasin is as effective as antihistamines for treating hay fever, without the sedative effects often associated with these drugs.
Hay fever sufferers are recommended to take two to four capsules a day of FSC Butterbur until their symptoms are reduced.

Hayfever Study

The study was a two-week, randomised double-blind, comparative study of a Butterbur petasin extract and antihistamines on 131 sufferers of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in Switzerland and Germany. The results showed that the two treatments had similar effects, but that Butterbur petasin did not have the sedative and fatigue side-effects reported by 66% of the patients given the antihistamines.

Butterbur petasin was well tolerated, although no data exists on its prolonged use, and the author suggests further research is necessary. However, treatment would be only for periods of peak pollen count in spring and summer, and offers a means of avoiding the side effects produced by antihistamines.

Other studies

Two other placebo controlled trials also concluded that a herbal extract of butterbur was shown to be more, or as effective as ‘non- sedating’ antihistamines in controlling seasonal allergic rhinitis (hayfever) without the drowsiness associated with antihistamines.

What Is Butterbur?

Butterbur grows all over the UK predominantly on wet marshy land and looks like a giant rhubarb plant. It is the root of the plant that contains the highest concentrate of active ingredients, Petasin and Isopetasin. The Butterbur Petasin root has to undergo a complex and lengthy extraction process in order to isolate the best quality and most effective extract and to ensure that all pyrrolizidine alkaloids are removed.
