SPIRE HOSPITALS TOP THE CARE QUALITY - LEAGUE TABLE

Spire Healthcare has topped the league table of private hospital operators who meet national government minimum care standards.

Of Spire Healthcare’s 25 UK hospitals, 73 percent achieved or almost achieved all 32 core standards during 2006/2007, compared with the other top three private providers BMI/General Healthcare which met 63 percent, Nuffield which met 61 percent, and Capio at 56 percent.

The standards include the quality and safety of treatment, cleanliness of the hospitals, staff recruitment and training and information available to patients.

Spire Healthcare’s director of clinical services, Doctor Jean-Jacques de Gorter, said: "These results reflect the dedication of our consultants and all our staff as well as our ongoing commitment to delivering safe, high quality and personal care and attention."

Spire Healthcare is the only private hospital provider which offers a BSc (Hons) in Professional Studies for its healthcare and clinical staff in partnership with the University of Huddersfield.

It was also one of the 1st private providers to publish on its website a wide range of easily understandable clinical quality data including MRSA rates, return to theatre rates and surgical site infections.

The care standard figures were included in the Healthcare Commission’s State of Healthcare Report 2007 which showed that compliance with national standards had improved in both the NHS and the independent healthcare sector over the last year.
