New research on how to keep your joints supple this winter

Keeping your joints supple and flexible this winter could be as easy as increasing your essential fatty acid intake, new research has uncovered.

Osteoporosis (OA) sufferers who took part in a study carried out by American College of Rheumatology (ACR) were able increase the distance that they were able to walk pain-free by an average of 45 percent after taking Celadrin, a patented blend of essential fatty acids . Participants also reported a 35 percent decrease in knee discomfort following the trial and displayed significantly improved knee function overall.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated 93 participants over a period of 60 days. Subjects, ranging from 40 to 86 years of age, all suffered from OA of the knee and were selected according to criteria, the gold standard criteria for selecting patients to take part in OA trials. All patients were evaluated before Celadrin was administered and again after two, four and eight weeks. During each evaluation, participants were asked to walk for six minutes to measure how far they could travel before having to stop due to knee discomfort.

Essential fatty acids contribute to joint health by decreasing inflammation in the joint area. The fatty acids are also thought to help repair damaged cell membranes and replace lost fluids in joints, thereby increasing the “slip” between joint surfaces. As a result, joint mobility and flexibility is increased and pain is reduced.

Celadrin is thought to be more effective in helping to support joint health due to the high bioavailability of its essential fatty acids compared to other sources such as fish oils. Essential fatty acids contained in fish oils come in triglyceride form and the body has to metabolise these triglycerides into an esterified form before the Essential fatty acids can be used. Celadrin is a blend of essential fatty acids that are already esterified and are therefore more readily utilized by the body.

GP and orthopaedic sports physician Doctor Rav Naik , says: “These are promising results and warrant further investigation. Complementary medications can be used in combination with physical therapy and joint protection techniques to improve joint health and lessen the risk of developing arthritis. If steps are taken early enough then conditions like arthritis could even be prevented from occurring in the 1st place.”
